AI and the Rules Nobody Wants to Read

Everyone's racing to adopt AI. The productivity gains are real. The risks are realer.

I keep coming back to one question: just because we can, does that mean we should?

Here's the analogy that won't leave me alone. You wouldn't hand a customer's file to a stranger in a pub and ask their opinion. You'd vet them first. Contracts. NDAs. Due diligence. The fact that the "stranger" is now a large language model doesn't change the fundamental obligation one bit.

Data is data. Trust is trust.

The legislative landscape makes this genuinely hard. GDPR doesn't pause for innovation. The Data Protection Act has no AI exemption. Customer contracts contain confidentiality clauses written years before anyone heard of ChatGPT. Navigating all of that takes real effort, real legal review, and real humility about what you don't yet know.

At Vibe, we started early and moved carefully. We reviewed AI provider terms with legal. We ran risk assessments against every use-case. We completed Data Protection Impact Assessments. We mapped everything against our existing compliance obligations. And we built processes to respond when provider terms or legislation changes, because in this space, they always do.

That work isn't finished. It never will be.

Shadow AI worries me most. Not malicious actors. Enthusiastic ones. Brilliant people using personal AI accounts for work tasks, not out of carelessness, but because the tools are extraordinary and the guardrails don't exist yet. We've seen it ourselves. That gap between capability and governance is where things quietly go wrong.

The answer isn't to slow AI adoption. It's to take the compliance work seriously enough that you never have to choose between innovation and integrity. We've invested in validated tools that give our teams the power of AI without compromising the trust our customers place in us.

None of this makes for a punchy conference slide.

But it's the difference between AI that genuinely serves your customers and AI that silently puts them at risk.

We owe people better than moving fast and hoping for the best.
